Day 4 reflection – Shunice

  1. I have enjoyed my time with the Thai kids as well as our OSL team most. Before the OSL thing, I didn’t know anyone in the team. But through this trip, I have got to interact with much more people as compared to how I was previously.
  2. I was afraid of having to interact with people that I didn’t know before OSL so I hesitated to join the project. But now thinking back, I didn’t regret my dicision and I had a lot of fun here in this trip. During the first day of teaching, I had a hard time trying to communicate with the Thai children as we did not understand each other and I didn’t know what to talk about with them. But as the day goes by, I somehow was able to teach the children on the second day of teaching. We did communicate a little and I manage to understand what they meant.
  3. 1 thing I learnt about the Royal sufficient trip was that the King puts the Thai people as first priority and cared a lot for them. The food that the Thai produce are given to the Thai first then the leftover food are then sold off to other people.
  4. I would try to communicate more with others and express my feeling more. I would also start to appreciate what I have and be responsible for what I do.

Day 3 reflection – Shunice

The past 3 days of service learning mean a learning path to me. I have learnt a lot from the school and the Thai children. Some taught me about having gratitude towards the things or the privileges we have and not take it for granted. The Thai children actually washes their own plate and utensils as well as their classroom fans. As compared to Singaporeans, we actually leave our plates and utensils on the table when finished eating and expect the cleaner to help us clean. All the things we have can be taken away in just a second so we really have to cherish what we have. I also learn from the school about being dicplined and responsible. When the primary 4 Thai children loss their classeoom keys, they were actually punished. The school were strict in teaching the kids about values where I also learn about being responsible for our own actions.

Day 2 reflection – shunice

  1. The best part of the day was that I was able to communicate with them a little more than before and that they enjoyed and had fun with us during the lesson time. When having group time, they would ask me to sit with them in the group and were friendly. Even though they talked to me in Thai, I was able to figure out what they were asking and tried replying them with actions and they somehow figured it out. After the lesson they would high five me which I felt happy seeing them happy too.
  2. The worst part of the day was the painting we did in the morning where we have to work fast and hard to complete the orange part of the basket ball court. It was the hardest when cleaning the brushes and paint on the roller as we need to use our bare hands and use our finger nails to scrub off the paint on the brushes and the rollers.
  3. I learn that the bell given by Japan is to symbolise peace between Thailand and Japan.

Shunice’s reflection for Day 1

  1. My first impression of the school was that the school is big and a bit more modern than I thought.
  2. I thought that the school would look more like village school however it has more common facilities then I expected. I was supprised that our lesson plan change last minute as what we previously planned wasn’t detailed enough and that it wasn’t suitable for the lesson. However we were able to think of another lesson plan to conduct with the primary 4 and surprisingly they understood us.
  3. My confidence level during day 1 wasn’t that good as I was afraid that I couldn’t interact with them well and that we have language barrier which would be harder to understand each other.
  4. The best moment I had was that we got to eat dinner as we were tired and hungry. And it was a relief that the Thai children was able to enjoy the lesson and have fun.

Local VIA @ Willing Hearts -Shunice

One difficulty I faced is that it was difficult to hold the plastic container that has rice filled as the bottom of the container is very hot. It wasn’t easy to hold the container for a long time while putting the side dish in the container.

Two things that we have done well was that everyone was able to match each others pace when putting the food in the container and everyone persevered through the packing process despite waking up early and packing the food for a long period of time.

I have learn that teamwork is really important in order to complete a task successfully. We helped to cover each other’s duty when they are busy with something else. I learned that we are one in a team and that there is no individual in a team. The service work was meaningful as it help us to strengthen our bond between one another.
